In the pageant world, first impressions are everything. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just starting out, the importance of a stunning headshot cannot be overstated. Your headshot is your calling card, your introduction to the judges, and often the very first thing that people see when they look at your application. So, how do you go about choosing the right photographer to capture your essence? This is a question I’ve been asked countless times, and it’s one that every pageant contestant grapples with at some point.

The Overwhelming World of Pageant Photography

If you’ve been involved in pageants for any length of time, you know there’s no shortage of photographers eager to take your picture. It seems like there’s a photographer on every corner, each with their own unique style, pricing, and level of experience. And, of course, everyone has an opinion about where you should go. Some will swear by the sponsor photographer, and others will tell you about the “hidden gem” they found. It can be overwhelming and honestly, a bit frustrating to sort through all the options and figure out what’s right for you.

Beauty is subjective, and what resonates with one person might not resonate with another. This is why it’s so important to choose a photographer whose work you love, someone whose style aligns with your vision of how you want to present yourself to the world. You need to be confident in your choice of photographer.

My Advice to You: Trust Your Instincts

So, how do you go about choosing the right photographer? My first piece of advice is simple: if you find a photographer whose work you absolutely love, reach out and book them. Don’t wait, don’t hesitate. If you think you can’t afford it, save your money until you can. The worst thing you can do is book with one photographer expecting the results of another. Photographers are artists, and each one has a different style, vision, and approach to their work.

For example, some photographers excel at capturing natural, candid moments, while others might be masters of dramatic lighting and high-fashion poses. Some might specialize in soft, romantic looks, while others might go for bold, edgy aesthetics. You need to find someone whose style matches what you envision for your headshot. This can give you a diverse portfolio of images that showcase different sides of your personality.

Don’t Let Others Dictate Your Choices

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in pageantry is letting others dictate your choices. Just because someone tells you that you “must” go to a certain photographer doesn’t mean you actually have to.

Your headshot is an expression of who you are, and it should reflect your personality, your style, and your vision. It should make you feel confident and proud. Don’t allow anyone to make you feel like you have to conform to a certain standard or that you have to follow a specific path in order to be successful. You have the freedom to choose the photographer that you feel most comfortable with, and that’s a powerful thing.

Do Your Research

Now, I’m not saying that you should just randomly pick a photographer without doing any research. Quite the opposite. Research is key to making an informed decision. Start by checking out the pageant you’re competing in and look at the sponsors. Who do they recommend? Who have past winners worked with? This can give you a good starting point, but don’t stop there.

Ask your friends in the pageant community for recommendations. They can offer invaluable insights based on their own experiences. Social media is also a fantastic resource. Stalk Instagram and Facebook, look at photographers’ portfolios, read reviews, and see what kind of work they’ve done for other contestants. Take note of what you’re drawn to, what catches your eye, and what makes you think, “That’s the look I want.”

Once you’ve done your research, you’ll be in a much better position to make a decision. You’ll have a clearer idea of what you’re looking for, and you’ll be able to communicate that to the photographer you choose.
